Following his schooling he helped out on the family farm. Walter learned carpentry and worked as a carpenter for many years. In November of 1941 Walter joined the U.S. Navy. After his training at the Great Lakes Naval Station he transferred to the battleship Colorado. Walter first served in the South Pacific. Later the Colorado took part in the invasion of Tarawa, Kwajalein and the Marianas' Islands. The ship was hit by shore batteries off Tinian and suffered several casualties. Five months later it was hit by two kamikaze aircraft at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In the spring of 1945 the ship participated in the invasion of Okinawa and later supported the occupation of Japan. Walter served aboard the USS Colorado through the end of World War II. After returning to the Alexandria area Walter continued with carpentry and helping his brothers and sisters with the family farm. Walter was a big fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. He enjoyed fishing and caring for the cemetery at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
