William S. Johnson was born in Carlton County, Minnesota, on November 2, 1894, the son of Matt and Akata (Juola) Johnson. He came to this area at the age of 10 and was the last surviving member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church 1910 Confirmation class. He attended school and grew to manhood in Moe Township. William served his country in World War I from July, 1918 to August 1919. He fought in the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne Forest until the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. He then continued to serve in the Army occupation until his discharge. He returned to Moe Township to farm and became very active in the community. William served on the School Board for 22 years, was a township supervisor for 12 years, served on the REA Board for 32 years, and was a director of the First American Bank of Brandon for 30 years. He also was secretary of the Minnesota Finnish American Historical Society for 38 years and the original organizer of the local chapter. William was also active in military organizations being a charter member of both the Alexandria VFW and the Brandon American Legion. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Moe Township. William also enjoyed reading. He died on August 28, 1990, at the Hoffman Care Center at the age of 95 years.

William is survived by brother: Isaac R. Johnson of Farwell; sisters: Mayme E. A. Johnson of Farwell and Helen M. Reynolds of Farwell. William was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Emil, Hjalmer, Edward W. and Francis, sisters: Josephine Haabala, Alma Helin, Edna Johnson, Alena Johnson and one infant sister.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 1, 1990, 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Moe Township with Rev. Dane Worley Compton and Rev. Leland Johnson officiating. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery, Moe Township. Pallbearers were Verner Johnson, Verner Haabala, James Heins, William Hulkonen, Rev. Leland Johnson and Walter Juntunen. Honorary pallbearers were Warren Gibson, Ralph Tillitt, Dr. Larry Novotny, Ray Seppanen, Helen Alto, Beverly Weisel, Jack Hedine, and Enid Krueger. Military Honors were by American Legion Post No. 278 and VFW Post No. 936. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
