It hath pleased the Almighty God to summon out of this vale of tears to our eternal home the soul of Matt Johnson, who departed this life on Monday evening at 11 o'clock April 15, 1940 at the Minnewaska hospital, Starbuck after a brief illness. The deceased was born on Feb. 24, 1859 at Suomussalmi Oulun Laani, Finland, and was 81 years, 1 month and 21 days old at the time of his passing away. In his infancy he was baptized in the name of the Triune God, and at the age of 15 he was confirmed in the Lutheran church. In 1880 at the age of 21 he emigrated to Hancock, Michigan, where he was employed until he went to Canada. In 1884 he was married to Josephine Juola, who was permitted to live with him for about one year. This union was blessed with one child, who passed away in infancy. On June 12, 1885 he entered holy wedlock with Agatha Juola at Port Arthur, Canada. In 1886 they moved to Tower, Minn., where he was the first employee in the first mine in Minnesota. They moved to Douglas county in 1889 going to Duluth two years later, which city consisted of only five frame buildings at that time. They moved to Moose Lake in 1893 where they homesteaded in the wilderness, enduring the hardships of the pioneers. He helped organize Kalevala township in Carlton County and held several important offices in that township. Also the Kalevala Postoffice was started in 1901 in his home, as well as the first public school. In this connection he also ran a country store until moving to Moe township in Douglas County in 1905 where he has lived ever since. He was engaged in active farming and running a resort on Lobster Lake since that time, where he also made his home until his death. He was known as a hard working, honest man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Those he leaves to mourn are five sons and four daughters, Josephine (Mrs. Josephine Haabala), Emil, Mrs. Alma Helin, William, Isaac, Mamie and Helen, all of this community, Edward and Francis of Upsala and two brothers, Ed and Jack Johnson of Holmes city, and one brother-in-law, Gust Juola of Echo, Minn. There are 9 grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death, 8 1/2 years ago, also two children in infancy, one son, Hjalmer died in February 1912, at the age of 19 years, also one daughter, Alena.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 20th at 1:15 from the residence and 2 p.m. from Finnish Evangelical Lutheran church. Rev. A. S. Krankkala of Sebeka officiated assisted by Rev. Wm. Lohman of Hoffman. The honorary pallbearers were C. J. Pipo, Chas. Mike, Chas. Matson, Emil Kivisto, Arvid Mattila, Andrew Hulkonen. The active pallbearers were five sons, Emil, William, Edward, Isaac, Francis and a grandson, Archie Haabala. Interment was made in the church cemetery.
