The community was greatly shocked to learn that Mrs. Math Johnson had passed on to the Great Beyond at 6:30 p.m., September 7. Although not in the best of health for a long time, Mrs. Johnson's death was very sudden and was caused from a heart attack.

Mrs. Math Johnson was born November 28, 1866, in Finland and at the time of her death was 64 years, 9 months and 9 days old. She came to America about 1884 and went to Port Arthur, Canada, and was married in June 1885 to Math Johnson. In 1886 they moved to Tower, Minn. In 1889 they came to Douglas county, going to Duluth in 1891. In the year 1893 they moved to Moose Lake where they homesteaded in the wilderness, enduring the hardships of the pioneers. The lived at Moose Lake 13 years, returning to Douglas county in 1905 and have since made their home in Moe township.

Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, nine of whom survive, besides the bereaved husband. They are Mrs. Jacob Haabala (Josephine), Emil Johnson of Moe, Alma Helin of Holmes City, Wm. Johnson at home, Edward Johnson of Upsala, Minn., Isaac Johnson at home, Frances Johnson at Chicago, Mayme Johnson at home, Helen at home. Two children died in infancy. One son, Hjalmer died in February 1912 at the age of 19 years, and Alena died August 1, 1926. It will be recalled that Alena (a nurse) was at home for a few days vacation and was burned in a kerosene explosion, dying five days later. Surviving also is one brother, Gust Juola of Cloquet, Minn., and one brother and one sister in Finland.

Mrs. Johnson was confirmed in the Finnish church in Finland and has always been active in the church work. She was a member of the Finnish Lutheran National Church in the different places where she has always lived and was a pioneer church builder, the Moose Lake church being started in her home. Mrs. Johnson was a loving mother, a kind neighbor and will be greatly missed in her family and large circle of friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the residence and 1:30 at the Evangelical Finnish church, Rev. E. V. Niemi, Sr., of Thomson and Rev. R. V. Niemi, Jr., of Calumet, Mich., conducting the services. Burial was made in the church cemetery. The pallbearers were five sons, William, Emil, Edward, Isaac and Francis, and a son-in-law, Jacob Haabala.
