Miss Sylvia H. Haabala, age 69, 206 Third Street S.E., Rochester, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 1988, at Rochester Methodist Hospital where she had been a patient for the past week and a half. She had been ill with cancer for the past four and one-half years.

She was born April 12, 1918, Douglas County, Minnesota, daughter of the late Jacob Haabala and Josephine Johnson. Survivors are three sisters: Mrs. Anna Hanna of Breckenridge, Minnesota; Mrs. Lillian Scherer, Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Mrs. Toivo (Ellen) Hulkonen, Brandon, Minnesota and one brother Verner Haabala, Brandon, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother Archie. Also surviving are nine nephews, two nieces, three uncles and two aunts.

During her lifetime she was a Medical Reference Librarian at Mayo Clinic from 1947-1981, having served Mayo for 33 1/2 years. She received her elementary education in a one room school house in Douglas County, Minnesota. The building is now located at Alexandria Historical Society Museum. She graduated from High School at Alexandria, Minnesota and graduated from the U of M Library School in 1943. She worked at the LaCrosse, Wisconsin Library until coming to Mayo in 1947. During her tenure at Mayo she served as Secretary of Medical Library Association, Inc., 1968-1970; she represented Rochester librarians at Minnesota Governors Pre-Whitehouse Conference on Library and Information Services, 1978; Life member of U of M Alumni Association; Mayo Clinic Women's Club of Rochester and Rural St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Brandon, Minnesota.

Visitation was held at Vine Funeral Home, Rochester, Minnesota, Friday, March 11, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral was Sunday March 13, 1988, 2 p.m. at Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home with Rev. Dane Worley Compton, Pastor of St. Paull's Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Moe Township.
