CARRUBA, JOSEPHINE MODICA Mrs. Josephine Modica Carruba age 97 of Pleasant Grove passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012. Josie was born in the little mining town of Coalmont, Alabama in Shelby County. When Josie was about 3 years old her family moved to Margaret, Alabama so her father could work in the DeBartoleben Mines. During World War II she worked near Pell City making cloth pouches for the soldiers' ammunition. As a young adult Josie's family moved to Pratt City where she met her loving husband and soul mate- Charlie. Josie lived in West End for many years before moving to Pleasant Grove. Josie was a strong lady who overcame adversity by tackling each obstacle head on. She was very independent and knew how to get things done. Josie was a beautiful seamstress, very skilled with crocheting, cooking, gardening and was always ready to help her church with the annual Spaghetti Dinner, St. Joseph's Altar, Thanksgiving Dinners, bake sales, arts and craft bazaars and sewing altar cloths. She received a prayer blanket from her nieces during one illness which prompted her to start the prayer blanket ministry which continues today. Josie will be fondly remembered as a devout catholic, her passion for pulling practical jokes, and her love of bingo, Mexican train dominos, bread making and serving her family. We have lost an angel. Braves baseball and Alabama football has lost an avid fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Joseph Carruba; parents; Jiacomo Modica and Crucifice "Susie Mary" Scazzo; brothers, Sabastiano "Buster" Modica, Charlie Modica, and Ret. Lt. Col. Jack Modica Jr.; sisters, Rosa Messina and Lena Carruba; and sisters-in-laws, Dorothy Modica and Jackie Modica. She is survived by her son, Charles Louis Carruba (Annette); grandchildren, Steven Joseph Carruba (Judith); Josie is survived by four generations of nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends and family who was influenced by Josie's loving and caring spirit. She taught us all many life lessons through her strong catholic faith. She will always be remembered for her hard work for her church, her love of cooking and those mischievous antics. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 7, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 pm followed by Rosary Service at 7:00 pm at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West End. Funeral Mass will be Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 10:00 am at Blessed Sacrament with Father Jim Booth officiating and burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Mrs. Carruba's memory
