Harold William Boham, 86, Corning, was born to Ralph William and L. Maude (Jarvis) Boham at Carbon Dec. 24, 1911. He died at home June 19, 1998.
He attended school and started to high school in Carbon then entered high school in Corning the first year the present school was opened. After graduation he taught a rural school for one year then attended Chillicothe Business College at Chillicothe, Mo., for
a year.
One of the major events of his early life was pitching on the state championship baseball team in his senior year in 1930. He played professional baseball throughout the midwest states eventually signing a major league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He never played major league ball, deciding to forego his professional career in 1939 for a more stable family life.
He was married to Verda Campbell Dec. 21, 1935. He worked with his father a few years operating coal mines in the Carbon area
and in 1941 began working with the Burlington Railroad as a fireman then engineer for the Burlington, Rock Island and Alton railroads. They lived in Bloomington, III., .from 1942-46 then, in Carbon, Nodaway and Creston until 1968 when they moved to Corning. He retired in 1975.
Mr. Boham was always interested in baseball and had helped many young people develop skills and ability. In June 1997 he was honored to throw out the opening pitch for the beginning of the Little League Baseball season.
Services were held June 22 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Corning with the Rev. Richard Layman officiating. Burial was in the
Quincy Cemetery, Corning.
He was preceded in death by his son Harold Lyle in 1967; a grandson; brother Charles Boham; and sisters Lucille Brown and Beulah Millard.
He is survived his wife; daughter L. Darlene (Husband Richard) Bailiff of Corning; one granddaughter; and three great-granddaughters.
Casket bearers were Mick Snyder, Dennis Hill, alvin Inman, Edward Inman, Jeff Colwell, Mark Sorensen, and Mitch Sorensen.
Honorary bearers were Evelyn Thomas, Ray Thomas, and Max Weeks.
Memorials are in his name.
