We have lost a giant oak in our family tree.

On May 27, 1939 he received a Palmer Method Certificate in penmanship given at Chicago, Illinois for proficiency in handwriting. He graduated from the 8th grade at Assumption School in scholarship and integrity of character on June 11, 1939. He was an Alter Boy and prayed the mass in Latin. He was also a Tender Foot Boy Scout. James graduated from Central High School on June 3, 1943.

Upon graduation, he was drafted into the Navy at Great Lakes, Illinois on December 3, 1943. He was in the WWII Asiatic Pacific Theater as a signalman 1st class on LST 814. He was granted an honorable discharge on May 12, 1946 and has the LST commission flag pennant with 48 stars that was hoisted on the 814. He was married to Odelia (Becker) Gauer at Assumption Cathedral on September 6, 1947.

After WWII he was an apprentice at Krieger-Ragsdale in the printing business, earning 55 cents an hour. He then received a certificate from the International Typographical Association. He worked at the Evansville Printing Corporation and retired after 38 years of service. He received his Indiana Real Estate License in 1985 and worked for Culley Realty and F.C. Tucker.

His hobbies included tennis, ping pong, photography, IU basketball, and fishing. He had an eternal love of sketching art, math, science, and crossword puzzles.

James is survived by his deeply loved wife of 65 years, Odelia Gauer; his daughter, Carolyn Sue (Gauer) Peter and her husband Bernard Joseph Peter. He has two granddaughters that he held on a pedestal, Lindsey Carolyn Peter and Heather Odelia Peter-Carroll (Timothy); and two great-grandchildren, Coleton and Cian Carroll. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Alice Beavin; two brothers-in-law, Carl and Gary Cunningham; and by many nieces and nephews.
