Louis C. Foy, active in school sports field, dies at 57

Louis C. Foy, 57, of 166 Broad Street, Salamanca, died early Friday, July 24, 1981, in St. Francis Hospital, Olean.

He was born May 20, 1924, in Salamanca, the son of the late Glenn C. and Anna E. Vail Foy.

Mr. Foy was assistant coach at Randolph Central School in 1952, coaching football, basketball and baseball. He went to Bolivar, where he was football, wrestling and baseball coach from 1952 to 1955. He came to Salamanca in 1955 as a track coach, and in 1957 was appointed athletic director in Salamanca and served as JV basketball, JV football and varsity track and wrestling coach. His track teams were consecutively the Cattaraugus County champions from 1958 through 1970 and won 10 CCIA championships and seven Section 6 championships.

He has acted as director of Saturday, the summer swimming program at Salamanca High School from its inception in 1957 through 1974. Mr. Foy was president of Section 6 of the New York State High School Athletic Association from 1975-1978, was vice president in 1972-73, treasurer from 1964-to 1972; and secretary from 1973-75. He has served as president secretary and treasurer of the CCIAC.

He had served as chairman of the basketball and football committees for Section 6, and was a member of the basketball, track and ways and means committee.

In 1979 Mr. Foy was Section 8 representative to the state Intersectional Committee and the state Safety Committee.

Mr. Foy was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church of Salamanca, Holy Cross Athletic Club, Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge No. 1025, American Legion, Hughes Skiba Post No. 535, and Moose Lodge No. 1002.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley M. DeBalski Foy; three sons, Jud Foy of Boliver, Tod Foy of Indianapolis, Ind., and Glenn Foy of Salamanca; a daughter, Penny Foy of
Salamanca; a granddaughter, Julia Marcelle Foy of Boliver; and a brother, J. Vail Foy of Moscow, Idaho.

The funeral was held at 9 a.m. Monday in O'Rourke and 0'Rourke Funeral Home, Salamanca, followed by a Mass of Christian burial in Holy Cross Church, Salamanca. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca.
