Chester John McConville was the son of John McConville and Mary Ann Leahy McConville. He grew up in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. When he was a young man, he worked many different jobs in Seattle, eventually migrating to California. He worked on ranches doing whatever work he could find. Chet met and married Clara White, a divorced woman with four children. Two of Clara's daughters were adopted and her eldest daughter was left with Clara's mother when she and Chet moved to San Francisco. Clara's youngest child, Ernest, remained with her and was raised as Chet's son. Chet and Clara had three more children, James, Edith, and Chester, Jr.

In about 1918, the family moved to Seattle where Chet's sisters lived and worked. He worked various jobs. Some years later, the family moved to Tukwila, Washington. Clara was quite often ill and emotionally fragile. She died in 1926 of a heart condition.

Chet stayed with his family until his daughter was married, then headed back to California to work the ranches. His family lost track of him until one day in 1946 his daughter Edith received a telegram informing her of her father's death from heart attack. She arranged for his body to be transported by train to Tacoma and he was buried in Calvary Cemetery next to his wife, Clara.
