Rosemary, 86, died at her home in Lancaster. She was born in Detroit, in a house her father built. Her parents, immigrants from England, were Charles and Clara Hirst.

She graduated from McKenzie High School and Wayne State University, and taught public school in Michigan for three years. She attended Chicago Theological Seminary from 1943-46, graduating with an MA in religious education. She taught religion in Troy, Ohio, for two years, for the Troy Council of Churches.

In 1948 Rosemary married Curtis Warren Smith in Detroit, and moved to Canaan, where Curtis was a pastor in the Grace United Methodist Church. After their three children were in school she took up teaching again, tutoring both children and adults in the states of MD, DE and NH.

She was a member of the Methodist Church since childhood. She always worked in the church, especially in Sunday School and United Methodist Women.

Rosemary was a member of the local chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). She was an avid reader and was a diligent correspondent, keeping in touch through letters with family and friends everywhere. She was a great one for walking; Pine Mountain in blueberry season being one of her favorite hikes. She loved card games and all sorts of word puzzles, especially crosswords.

Rosemary is survived by her husband of 57 years, Curtis W. Smith; her children, Margaret C. Smith of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Susanna P. Smith of Seattle, Wash., Philip R. Smith of Providence, R.I.; two grandchildren; her sister, Marjorie Hirst Parrish of Chicago, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Two brothers, Mason and Charles Hirst, died previously.

Contributions to Christian missions or to relief work may be sent to the Christ United Methodist Church, 16 Church Street, Lancaster, NH 03584.
