ELI LABO HAS PASSED AWAY
FORMERLY MAIL CARRIER IN THE COUNTY AND LEAVES A NUMBER OF RELATIVES IN BELVIDERE WHERE HE WAS WELL KNOWN
Elis Labo, formerly well known in this vicinity, died at his home in Chemung on Thursday. Mr. Labo formerly carried the mail between the Belvidere post office and the post office that was maintained in Bonus.
In speaking of his death the Harvard Independent says:
Eli Charles Labo was born in the state of New York January 7, 1858. His parents came to Illinois when he was about three years of age, locating near Richmond. There he spent his boyhood days, but in early manhood he moved with his parents to Iowa where he spent a number of years. Returning to Illinois he made his home with his sister, until his marriage on September 2, 1886, to Miss Mary Furgeson. To this union were born four children, two boys and two girls, as follows; Leonard B., Mrs. Ida Burton, Earl P. (who died in childhood) and Ina R., who resides at home. His married life was spent within a radius of a few miles of Chemung, but in 1905 dealing health caused him to move to town where his remaining years were spent, being employed at the condensing factory until recently. His last illness was of two weeks duration. Ill health had destroyed his vitality and he gradually grew worse till on the morning of June 22, 1911 he passed away at the age of 53 years, 5 months, and 15 days. He is survived by his wife and three children; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pease of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Dora Martin of Belvidere.
Funeral services were held at the house Saturday at 10 a.m. being conducted by Rev. S. G. Waggoner. The singers were Mrs. F. S. Maxon and Mrs. J. J. Kennedy, C. Chapin, J. Conn, E. J. Burr, J. Dawson, and C. E. Ambler. . The remains were taken to the Russelville Cemetery for interment.
Relatives and friends called from other cities were Mrs. Minnie Miller of Nekoma, Kansas, Dora Martin, J. Diamond, Y. Furgeson, F. Furgeson, E. Martinson, and W. Ford of Belvidere, R. Ferguson of Poplar Grove, and B. Furgeson of Russelville.
MOVED POST OFFICE IN A BAG
BROUGHT THE WHOLE INSITUTION TO BELVIDERE AND BONUS POST OFFICE WAS TERMINATED
The death of Eli Labo at Chemung recalls to many the time when there was a “Bonus Postoffice” in Boone County. Mr. Labo was for sometime the mail carrier between the Belvidere postoffice and the Bonus Postoffice, there being no railroad at Bonus and the mail being carried from Belvidere in a wagon. Finally with the growth of mail being carried facilities and the spreading of the rural free delivery system, the Bonus Postoffice was abandoned and one day Postmaster Sanford and Mail Carrier Labo brought the whole Bonus Postoffice establishment to Belvidere in a bag and turned the property over to the Belvidere Postmaster. When the property in the bag was counted and checked off, the Bonus Postoffice was no more.
