FLY CREEK _ Gerda C. Winnie died Friday, April 20, 2012, at Otsego Manor. She was 96.

Born April 1, 1916, in Comstock, Neb., the daughter of Carl and Inger (Knudsen) Christiansen, she and her family moved to the Cooperstown area when she was young. She graduated from Cooperstown Central School in the Class of 1934.

She married lifelong area resident, Ernest R. Winnie on April 9, 1941, and they resided in Fly Creek throughout their long life together. Ernie predeceased her on Dec. 31, 2007. She was also predeceased by one brother and three sisters.

Gerda was devoted to her family and community. She was a 4-H leader for many years as well as a member of the Home Bureau, the Fly Creek Area Historical Society, the Order of the Eastern Star, an Honorary member of the Cooperstown Native Daughters, and was an active member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church.

She worked in the Cooperstown Elementary School cafeteria for over 20 years and is loved and remembered by generations of students as the "dessert lady" for her delicious, handmade desserts and cookies.

She loved to bowl, take long walks through the fields and woods (usually with a dog at her side), and bake. Her creations, especially her apples pies, regularly filled the tables at church functions and at the early Fly Creek Cider Mill Applefest celebrations. Following her retirement, she and Ernie enjoyed spending part of each winter in Ocala, Fla.

Despite all of her community interests her family always came first. She was the daily "go to babysitter" for her local grandchildren and she enjoyed visits and hearing about all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities and accomplishments.

Gerda is survived by her five children, Joanne (Craig) Travers of Hopedale, Mass., Lee (Sue) Winnie of Fly Creek, Margaret Winnie of Richfield Springs, Jean Neff of Williamsville, and Richard (Kathy) Winnie of Ocala, Fla. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Catherine Christiansen of Sebring, Fla., and Helen Winne Mulligan of Fly Creek; and her brother-in-law, Douglas Olmstead of Middlefield.

The family will be in attendance from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown, to receive friends.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Pullyblank, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery will follow the service.

The family would like to extend their sincere and heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers at Otsego Manor for the loving care they all provided to Gerda.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest that contributions be made in Gerda's memory to either the "Activities Fund" at Otsego Manor, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
