Paul R. "Pete" Hawthorne, 70, of Hummelstown, passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Hummelstown on April 17, 1942, he was the son of the late George L. and Ethel M. Shertzer Hawthorne. Pete painted cars for a living.
Pete was a true patriot who loved his country and was proud of his service with the U. S. Marine Corps. He served in the Viet Nam War, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Pete founded the Bob Smith Detachment #784, Marine Corps League, Hummelstown, and served as a Past Commandant and Pay Master. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1687 and the American Legion Post 265 both of Hummelstown; and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 48, Hershey. He attended St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hoernerstown. Pete enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Pete is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rosalie Wilson Hawthorne, whom he married on December 24, 1976; one son, Steven L. Wilson fiance of Rose Marsh of Middletown; two daughters, JoAnne M. Hawthorne fiancée of Shane Sager of Lawnton, and Alicia J. Hawthorne fiancée of Jamie McCord of Dillsburg; two sisters, Alice M. Hawthorne and Betty L. Bashore both of Hummelstown; a sister-in-law, Nancy Hawthorne of Hummelstown; and six grandchildren, Jessica K. Lockard, Rebeca L. Sager, Jenna M. Sager, Austin M. McCord, Johnny J. McCord, and Bear Paul Sager.
In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janice Mae Hawthorne in 1983; a brother, George E. Hawthorne; and a sister, Mary A. Mansberger.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at 11 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc. 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Dr. Emlyn H. Jones, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township. Friends are invited to the viewings in the funeral home Monday, November 12, 2012, from 6 to 8 PM and Tuesday from 10 AM until time of the service.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the March of Dimes, Central PA Chapter, 3544 North Progress Avenue, Suite 204, Harrisburg, PA 17110; or to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, 2001 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110-9791.
