United States Army Captain Todd Tyler Christmas, 26, son of Brad and Becky Christmas of Wagon Mound, passed away on Nov. 29, 2004. He was traveling in a Blackhawk helicopter when it collided with a guy wire near Waco, Texas, killing all aboard.

Todd was born on March 8, 1978 in Las Vegas, N.M. He was a 1998 graduate of the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell where he received an Associates of Arts degree. He went on to attend Texas A&M University where he received a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture Economics and was the Distinguished Military Graduate in August 2001.

He was united in marriage to Erica Lane Smith of Arlington, Texas, on Aug. 18, 2001.

He was commissioned through the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets as an Air Defense Officer and graduated from the Air Defense Officer Basic Course in February of 2002. He then attended the United States Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., where he was awarded the parachutists badge. He joined the 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on March 28, 2002. While in the battalion, he served as an Avenger Platoon Leader, Linebacker Platoon Leader, and Battery Executive Officer while deployed in support of Iraqi Freedom. In June 2004, he was selected to serve as the Aide de Camp for Brigadier General Charles Allen, the Assistant Division Commander (Support). He was a member of the Corp of Cadets at Texas A&M where he graduated and was commissioned in 2001. He was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas. Todd’s military awards included the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Parachutists Badge.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ace and Pauline Christmas of Farley, and by his cousin Shaun Berry of Lovington.

He is survived by his wife Erica Smith Christmas of Killeen, Texas. He is also survived by his parents Brad and Becky Christmas of Wagon Mound; brothers Matt Christmas of Albuquerque and Will Christmas of Las Cruces; grandparents Giles and Joie Lee, Lovington; aunts and uncles Libby and Danny Berry, Eunice, Maryann Ham, San Angelo, Texas, Bob and Mary Short, Alice, Texas, Candy Christmas, Ocala, Fla., and Greg and Jane Barby, Okarche, Okla.

Military services are to be held Friday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. at Ft. Hood, Texas. Graveside services will be held at the Christmas Ranch, nine miles south of Wagon Mound, on Monday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. for all family and friends. In the event of bad weather, the services will be held at Lutheran Church on North Seventh and Lutheran Lane in Las Vegas.
