Catherine was the youngest of five children born to Catherine Brooks and James Hilarian Kinsley. She was born just after her father left to fight in the Civil War, never to return. On 14 July 1878 she married Albert Henry Rathbun. They had three children. Son Charles died at the age of four years; Maggie died at the age of 24 years, leaving two small sons, Albert and George Rice; and son Ernest.
