originally interred in Millington Green Cemetery. Re-interred at Nathan Hale Park in 1904.

[The son of Isaac and Mary (Selden) Spencer, he married (1) Martha Brainerd on Aug. 2, 1738, and (2) Hannah Southmyd in 1756.
Joseph Spencer studied law at Yale College in 1746, and chosen Deacon at the new Millington Parish He was commissioned Lieut. in 1747 and Captain in 1752. He was Major of the 2nd reg. and Capt. of the 3d Co. in at least three campaigns of the French & Indian Wars. Because of his bravery, he was promoted to Colonel by the end of the war.
At the beginning of the Rev. War, he was passed over as Major General, and was given a lower rank of Brigadier General. Later, he was named the first Major General of the Conn. militia. In 1779, he was elected as a representative for Conn. to the Continental Congress.
He died at Millington and was originally buried with his wife and children in the Millington Cemetery. In the spring of 1901, the remains of Joseph & his second wife, Hannah, were moved to this cemetery and the monument to his accomplishments was erected (shown right). -courtesy Nareen Lake]
