Alice Christine (Bach) Koehler, 101, returned home on Nov. 4, 2012, after a massive stroke. Alice was a resident of Montana for 83 years, but passed away in Boise, Idaho, where she was living near one of her daughters, after she had a stroke.

She was the first of five children born on Sept. 15, 1911, to Minnie and Chris Bach in Brush, Colo. She attended schools in Colorado until the middle of her senior year in 1930, when her parents and 10 other families migrated to eastern Montana as part of a federal irrigation project.

After graduation in Savage, she was courted by Melvin Koehler, and they married on Aug. 5, 1933. They had two girls and two boys, and in 1953, they moved to Helena. In 1955, they settled in York where they purchased a home on 7 1/2 acres, and were extremely involved in community activities. After 33 years, they sold their place in York and purchased a home in Helena, where Melvin died in 1990.

Alice began working outside the home in 1959, first at the Garden Spot and then at the State Nursery, for civil defense, St. Peter's Hospital, Head Start and was an Amway distributor.

In 1973, Alice "began" a second career that embodied a major accomplishment in her life and turned into a lifestyle for her. She was 62 when she went to work for Holiday Health Foods until they closed 17 years later. She then worked for a few years at Nature's Promise and finally for Pathways to Health until she retired just before she turned 90. Her "second career" ended after 27 years, but she continued to teach her friends and family the art of "Touch for Health" in which she had become proficient! Alice was "born ahead of her time" in terms of studying and understanding the body and nutrition.

She was an accomplished pianist since age 13, and shared her talent with the York community at Christmas programs for the children. She played at dances and was involved in every aspect of local functions.

She was an excellent homemaker, gardener, loved music, darning, sewing, crocheting, embroidery, raising flowers and was the "Queen of Recycling." She was always involved in their children's school activities, Farmers Union, St. Paul's Church, politics and served at elections.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; her parents, Chris and Minnie Bach; brothers, Howard, Clifford and Fred Bach; son-in-law, Phillip Bouchard; grandson, Shane Koehler; granddaughter, Barbara Simkins; and great-granddaughter, Ruth Bouchard.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Jonasen; sister-in-law, Hazel Bach; daughters, Joan (Rich) Kozlowski and Karen (Clint) Simkins; sons, Gary (Penny) Koehler and Larry (Chris) Koehler; 11 grandchildren, Terry (Carol) Bouchard, Rick (Martha) Bouchard, Dell (Kristin) Bouchard, Nancy (John) Simkins Labbe, Steve (Tracy) Simkins, Angie Koehler, Chad Koehler, Tara (Keith) Koehler Bushnell, Lance Koehler, Neil (Kayce) Koehler, Kari (Randy) Koehler Parmer; 32 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous Bach and Koehler nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Pat Shurtliff and Anna May Boyd who cared for Alice in her last few years in Helena.

Cremation has taken place. Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Methodist Church, Helena, with the Rev. Marianne Niesen officiating. A dinner reception at the York Community Center will be afterward.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 512 Logan, Helena, MT 59601; or Light a Life, St. Peter's Hospital Foundation, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601.
