Dick was born April 17, 1937 in Quincy, the son of Lewis and Alice Smith Meckes. He married Ann Fischer on June 23, 1956 in Quincy.
Dick attended St. Boniface Grade School and Notre Dame High School, both in Quincy. He went on to attend Quincy College for his bachelor's degree, Western Illinois for his master's degree and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for his Ph.D. During college he was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. He was a math teacher at Quincy Jr. High School for 5 years, Chairman of the Math Department at Quincy Jr. High and Math Counselor for the Department of Education for 7 years. He became the Principal at Williamsville High School and was employed there for 18 years, retiring in 1991.
Dick was manager of the Larry L. Evans, Khoury League baseball team from 1971-1977. They were undefeated, and were the Illinois State Champions for 3 of the 6 years. He also coached other Khoury League baseball teams, basketball and flag football. He enjoyed sports, and was a fan of Notre Dame football, Marquette basketball, and the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2012, he was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame. Dick was very involved with Christ the King Catholic Church where he was a church member for 44 years and served on Christ the King School Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and granddaughter, Adrienne Meckes.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, three sons, one daughter, twelve grandchildren, three sisters, one brother and many nieces and nephews.
