Alice was born on Jan 24, 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee to Preston and Sarah Livermore Allen. Her parents were very strict as she was growing up, especially when it came to her education. Her father was especially strict but Alice frequently recalls him as being her hero. Alice was an only child and frequently visited her neighbors homes that had a television and was very close to her cousins especially Herb. Every Sunday Alice and her parents had a tradition that her mother would make Roast, mashed potatoes, and green beans. That tradition carried on for years and even through the generations later to come. Alice was thrilled when she turned 13 because she finally had a room of her own and not just a sofa to sleep on. Alice recalls never receiving an allowance, or being allowed to drive unless it was to and from church, and she was never taught to cook. For being an only child, Alice definitely wasn't spoiled. For extra money Alice would go to a friends flower field and pick flowers, making them into bundles that she would sell door to door around her neighborhood. Alice attended Whitehaven HS where she won a scholarship for a paper she wrote titled, "What it means to be American."
Alice met her future husband Don when she was 15, she had just been walking with friends when she spotted him sitting outside. All it took was a few words and she was hooked. They dated a couple years before marrying a week after Alice graduated from high school. One of those dates Don and Alice ran into a young man at a movie theatre who was new to the Memphis area and was an aspiring singer. This young man would later be known as the great Elvis Presley.
Alice and Don went on to have their first child a little over a year later followed by 3 more over the years. Alice went to work as a sheriffs deputy dispatcher and other various jobs through the years while raising 4 kids with Don. Both Alice and Don became dependent on alcohol and their marriage slowly dissolved and they were divorced in the early 70s. Alice went on to become clean and sober and met her second Husband John Chisler at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, they were later married. In her later years Alice became very involved in her Trinity Baptist Church by her home, and traveled whenever they could. Alice became known as Meemaw to her 6 grand kids and was a very strong woman who loved her Lord and her Country. Alice developed breast cancer in her late 60s, 10 years after John died of an heart attack. She fought with such strength and faith, and the monster as I call breast cancer, went into remission. Though two years later the breast cancer was back this time in her lower spine, she died just a couple months later with family by her side. One of the last things she said to me just days before she died was, "the light." And I have kept that close to my heart that she is indeed loving her new Heavenly home now.
