Geoffrey Paul Umphrey was the youngest child born to Thomas J. Umphrey (1850-1925) and Mary Belle (Copeland) Umphrey (1858-1908).
His siblings were James Garland Umphrey (1878-1950), Dayton William Umphreys, who added an "s" to the family name (1881-1957), Eber Gaylord Umphrey (born 1884), Hazel Irene (Umphrey) Schwob (1887-1980), Willa A. (Umphrey) Wolfe (1892-1960), and Lorinda Fern "Loie" (Umphrey) Houtz (1895-1953).
Early in the 20th century, Geoffrey and his future wife, Maude Mae Walker (1897-1970), were both students at the one room schoolhouse known as Midway School, near Newport, Iowa. They were married October 14, 1916, at the Parsonage of the First M. E. Church in Wapello, the county seat of Louisa County, Iowa. They lived in several locations in eastern Iowa, including Crawfordsville in Washington County, Davenport in Scott County, and New London in Henry County.
Their marriage produced two girls and two boys. Firstborn was Thelma Verlee (Umphrey/Allen) Bearde (1917-2012), followed by Margretta Mae (Umphrey) Howey (1920-1953). Thomas Samuel "Tom" (or "Tommy" as he was often known) was the first son (1922-1996), and their last child was Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey (Sr.) (1924-2007).
Geoffrey was living in New London, and working in West Burlington, Iowa at "the shops" for the CB&Q railroad, in 1931 when he needed an operation, which resulted in his death. He died at Memorial Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on March 9.

New London (IA), March 10 -- G. P. Umphrey, a resident of this community, passed away at the Memorial Hospital in Mt. Pleasant Monday evening at 9:45 (March 9, 1931) following an operation. He was the son of the late Thomas J. and Mary Umphrey and was born December 5, 1897, on a farm in Louisa county.
October 16, 1916, he was married to Miss Maude Mae Walker. For the past eight years Mr. Umphrey had been employed at the West Burlington shops and during his residence in New London has made many friends.
He is survived by his wife, four children, Thelma, Margretta, Thomas and Paul Eugene; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Schwob of Wapello, Mrs. Archie Wolfe of Morning Sun, Mrs. George Houtz of Burlington; three brothers, James and Eber Umphrey of Wapello, Dayton Umphrey of Independence, Missouri.
Short services will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in the house followed by services at the M. E. church in Morning Sun Sunday at 2 p.m. Interment at Elmwood cemetery.

Funeral of Geoffrey Umphrey
The funeral services of Geoffrey P. Umphrey, who passed away at Memorial hospital at Mt. Pleasant, March 9th, were held from the Methodist church in Morning Sun, Thursday afternoon last (March 12, 1931), conducted by Reverend W. G. Barr. The interment was at Elmwood cemetery. Relatives were present from Mt. Pleasant, New London, Burlington, Wapello and other near points.
