Early in the 20th century, Geoffrey and his future wife, Maude Mae Walker (1897-1970), were both students at the one room schoolhouse known as Midway School, near Newport, Iowa. They lived in several locations in eastern Iowa, including Crawfordsville in Washington County, Davenport in Scott County, and New London in Henry County.

Their marriage produced two girls and two boys. Firstborn was Thelma Verlee (Umphrey/Allen) Bearde (1917-2012), followed by Margretta Mae (Umphrey) Howey (1920-1953). Geoffrey was living in New London, and working in West Burlington, Iowa at "the shops" for the CB&Q railroad, in 1931 when he needed an operation, which resulted in his death. He died at Memorial Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on March 9.
