NORWICH, VT -Grace Stuart Richardson Stetson, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Wilder, Vermont on Monday, January 29, 2007.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in the Richardson Family cemetery section of Green Hill Cemetery in Greensboro.

She was born in Greensboro, the daughter of H. Smith and Grace Jones Richardson. Her grandparents, Mary Lynn and Lunsford Richardson, were well known Greensboro philanthropists. Lunsford Richardson was the creator of Vicks VapoRub and the many Richardson family cold remedies. Her father, Smith Richardson, built the company into an international success.

Mrs. Stetson spent her early years in Greensboro. Later the family lived in London and New York, finally settling in Greens Farms, Connecticut, but her heart was always in North Carolina. She attended Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut, married Eugene W. Stetson Jr. in 1935, and raised their four children in Southport, Connecticut. The marriage ended in divorce. She later married Paul J. Lambert. She moved to Vermont in 1963, where she remained a resident for 45 years.

Mrs. Stetson was a philanthropist who gave, often anonymously, to causes in which she believed. She "cuddled" premature babies, taught art at the Woodstock Correctional facility, and volunteered at homeless shelters. She loved music and dancing, was an avid watercolorist, and a passionate gardener. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and a devoted friend. She had a delightful sense of humor and was extremely frank in her opinions. As a Republican she campaigned for her Democratic son in law. As a grandmother of a child with Cystic Fibrosis she raised funds prodigiously. Through it all a strong faith propelled her.

She leaves behind her children, Nancy P. Stetson of Boulder, Colo., Stuart S. Daly of Roxbury, Conn., Patricia S. Agnew of Big Timber, Mich., E. William Stetson of Norwich, Vt.; a brother, Randolph Richardson of New York; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Mary Jackson Lang; her brothers, John P. Richardson and Smith Richardson Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (research), 6931 Arlington Road, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.
