Prof. Shreeram S. Abhyankar, of West Lafayette, passed away Friday November 2, 2012, while doing his beloved math sitting at his desk at home, in the company of his beloved wife Yvonne.

He was born July 22, 1930, in Ujjain, India to Shankar and Uma Tamhankar Abhyankar. On June 5, 1958, he married Yvonne Kraft Abhyankar in New York City. Shreeram was a Marshall Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Purdue University, where he joined the faculty in 1963. He was passionate about math, history, and spending time with his family and friends. Surviving along with his wife Yvonne, are his son Hari S. Abhyankar, wife Deepali, and daughter Kashi A. Behrstock, husband Jason, and grandchildren Maya, Kaia, Kira and Ela. Also surviving are his siblings; Shridhar, Shrinivas, Pushpa Abhyankar, and Balu. He also leaves behind a legacy of students who became part of his global family of mathematicians residing worldwide and whom he visited throughout his life.
