Carl W. Lee steered his younger brother away from gangs and helped him with his math, enabling him to graduate from high school. "He was the reason I ... got as far as I did," Rusty McMurtrey said through tears. "Since I can remember, Carl was the only one who'd been there for me." Lee, 23, of Oklahoma City, was killed by small-arms fire in a hostile attack Nov. 28. He was stationed at Camp Howze, Korea. Claudie Lee said she had not seen her oldest son since last Christmas. "He had some close calls," she said. "He said he didn't know if he'd make it home, and he didn't. We're still not believing it's true." Lee joined the Army after high school and was expected to leave after his three-year commitment. Instead, he had decided to make the military his career. Lee loved being a soldier but didn't want to go to Iraq, McMurtrey said. He said the two planned to start their own automotive business.
