My Spice Girl, Spicey and occasionly when she was grumpy, Old Spice! I got her in the summer of 2002. She was already six years old. Someone I knew called me and said that her friend was moving and had a bunch of animals that she needed to find homes for or she was taking them to the shelter on Monday, they were not allowed at her new rental. I told her to call me on Sunday and I would take whichever animals she had left. Luckily she was able to place all of them but two. So on Sunday, I went to pick up my two homeless new friends. I got a pure breed boxer named Layla and Spice. I was able to place the boxer with the help of the Boxer Rescue Society and Spice placed herself in my heart!

When I first let her out of the carrier, she darted under my bed where she stayed until the evening. As soon as I went to bed, lights off, she jumped on the bed. She was a very loving animal and was used to being around people and other animals. She already knew her name and had good manners. She would never walk on you, she would always go around. She would sleep beside me, but never touching. When she wanted petting, she would paw at you and scratch just a little. She knew how to get attention.

She was a beautiful calico cat, white with orange and black spots. I loved the spots on her legs and back of her feet. She had a huge white belly. She was a bit large when I got her.

Her favorite activities included laying upside down with her big furry white belly showing, laying on paper or any clothes that you laid out, and scratching up all my furniture and doorways! She didn't climb on furniture, she just liked to scratch it up. That was the only thing bad she ever did. Now, even after she has passed away, I find myself never leaving shoes out on the bedroom floor, I am still in the habit of keeping them out of her reach.

She was a really good girl. She was always in charge of the other animals. She would just stare at them and they would just move out of her favorite spot. She lived with Lucky, Tiger, and Peanut. I never saw her interact with Lucky. Spice was top "dog" and Lucky knew that. Peanut also avoided her, except with Spice would jump on the bed and then Peanut would bat at her from the floor, one look from Spice would send him running though. Tiger on the other hand thought he was top dog. He would walk up to her and present his head and wait for her to groom him for a few seconds.

A funny memory with her was once when I was in the bath tub, she was perched guard at the edge by the tub as she always did. Next thing you know, Lionel, my escapee hamster, runs by on the floor. I was so scared Spice would get him. I screamed and everyone ran. I am not sure how he got down out of his cage and off the podium, but that was probably his biggest adventure and a night out on the "town". So glad the my good girl didn't get him!

She got cancer a few years ago. It started as a liason on the back of her leg which they treated with some shots and medicine. Eventually it came back and further looking into it showed it was cancer. The cancer was too far gone for them to even amuptate her leg, which I wasn't even sure we wanted to do as she was getting to be so old. She was such a strong fighter, she lived quite a long time after her diagnosis. She eventually could not walk on that leg, but she got around good on three legs, holding the other up. We moved this fall and we never expected her to make the move, but she held on and did great with it. Just this last week she stopped moving around much and would lay near her food or litter. She died peacefully at the vet about 3:20 pm.
