Milton Dale Hopkins, loving husband and father, formerly of Onekama, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Curry House Assisted Living and Memory Care in Cadillac, surrounded by his family. He was 88.

Dale was born November 21, 1923, in Arcadia, Mich., the son of Walter and Hazel (Brown) Hopkins. He married Lois M. Ware May 12, 1946, in Arcadia, and God blessed them with 64 years of marriage.

Dale was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. His hobbies included camping, bird watching, working around the house, but most of all spending time with his family.

Upon graduating from Arcadia High School, he entered the United States Army on January 19, 1943. He served in World War II as a corporal in Battery D 548th anti-aircraft artillery battalion and was honorably discharged on February 25, 1946.

During his employment years, he worked for Packaging Corporation of America in Filer City, Mich., retiring in 1982 with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Onekama Church of the Brethren and took great joy in serving the Lord there for more than 60 years. He was also a member of The Onekama Lions Club serving for 40 years and was active in the Onekama community. Most recently, Dale attended Rollins Christian Fellowship in Manton, Mich., and played in the kitchen band at Curry House Assisted Living.

Everyone who met Dale was always greeted with a smile and a hug. He was perhaps the friendliest gentleman you would ever meet and took great pride in making others happy. Dale had the blessing of meeting all of his 10 great-grandchildren and especially cherished the time he spent with his daughters and their families.

Dale is survived by his daughters, Linda (Don) Miller of Shepherd, and Judy (Ken) Nichols of Cadillac; five grandchildren, Andrea (Clint) Hoagland, Dan (Vanessa) Miller, Jason (Emily) Nichols, Kurt (Heidi) Nichols and
Joel Nichols; 10 great-grandchildren, Elliott Hoagland, Isaac, Seth, Annabelle and Madeline Nichols, Andrew, Jonathan, Kirsten, Rachelle and Samuel Nichols; several nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, his sister, Zelda May, and his brother, Russell Hopkins.

Interment was held on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at the Bear Lake Township Cemetery. There will be a celebration of Dale's life on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Onekama Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Frances Townsend officiating, assisted by Pastor Bart Glupker. A luncheon in his honor will be hosted by the Onekama Lions Club at the Lion's Den at the fairgrounds immediately following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Onekama Church of the Brethren or the Onekama Lions Club. Envelopes will be available at his memorial.
