Leland Charles Effenbeck, son of William and Ruth Dunker Effenbeck, was born August 23, 1935, near Stoddard of rural Hebron, Nebr., and died at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Nebr., Sunday, December 15, 1991, at the age of 56 years.
He had undergone emergency surgery November 22, 1991, at Bryan Memorial Hospital.
He was baptized in 1935 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Stoddard, attended rural school district 69 and was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1950.
He graduated from Deshler High School in 1953. He remained in the Effenbeck farming operation with his parents and brother. In 1954, he became a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1958, spending 13 months in Korea and was discharged in 1960.
On August 18, 1963, he married Edith Dolezal of Narka. They were parents of two children.
They were involved in the dairy business, were members of the Mid America Dairy Association, Dairy Herd Improvement Association, and received production awards for their Grade A dairy business.
He was a charter member of the Thayer County Livestock Feeders Assn., serving as a director and president in 1978. He was involved in the Lutheran Brotherhood men's organization of Peace Lutheran, served on the church council many years and held various offices. He was a charter member of the Deshler Lions Club and a former director of the Thayer County Extension Council Board. He had been active in 4-H and served as a leader.
He was participating in the Mid-Nebraska Water Quality Project under the direction of the county Extension service, Soil Conservation Service, ASCS and other agribusiness representatives.
He became ill in August of 1990.
Preceding him in death were his father in 1986, and his mother in 1989.
He is survived by; his wife, Edith of Deshler; son, Scott of Superior; daughter, Mr. Kyle (Kristin) Timmerman of Hebron; brother, Alfred of Deshler; grandsons, Cody Alan and Garrett Brady Effenbeck, Superior.
Funeral services were held December 19 at Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler, with Pastor Harold Laursen officiating. Interment was in Deshler City Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Halfman Post No. 352, American Legion.
