Dr. Edward A. Glatfelter, a prominent York educator and civic leader, and past principal of York High School for 16 years, died Tuesday at York Hospital where he had been taken earlier from Rest Haven Convalescent Home. He was 81.
Born in Jackson Township, he was the son of the late Willie J. and Susie E. Hoke Glatfelter. He was the widower of Ruth M. Glatfelter, and resided in York before his admission to Rest Haven last year.
Dr. Glatfelter was a member of Christ Lutheran church and the vestry of that church. He was a member and past master of Zeredatha Lodge 451. Free and Accepted Masons, and a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Harrisburg consistory. He was a veteran of World War I.
surviving him are a son, Edward W. Glatfelter, Newton Square, a daughter Mrs Earl Shelbe Jr., Westminister, Md and seven grandchildren.
Dr. Glatfelter served as principal of William Penn Senior High School - then York High - from 1941 until his retirement June 3, 1957. a 1912 graduate of Ursinus College, he did his graduate work at Pennsylvania State university and served 45 years in the teaching profession, including a term as first principal of Hannah Penn Junior High School.
He also served as president of the Central Penn Scholastic Basketball and Football Leagues. A former member of the board of directors of York Hospital, he served two terms as a member of the three-man York city Zoning Board of Adjustment. In 1946, he was elected president of the state branch of the National Ass. of Secondary School Principals.
He was named by Gov. James H. Duff in September 1947, to represent state secondary school principals on a nine-member business school administering board. He also served as president of the state Teachers Retirement Board.
Murlo O. Ying, who was director of guidance at York High when Dr. glatfelter served as principal, termed his "father of College Night in the York area." Yinger said the event began here due to Dr. Glatfelter's effort.
Memorials may be made to the Thanksgiving Memorial and Building fund of Christ Lutheran Church.
