Irene Mae Gilbert, 83, of West Manchester Township, passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at York Hospital. She was the wife of Ernest J. Gilbert. Born June 10, 1931, in York, a daughter of the late Calvin and Mae (Kiler) Bixler, she attended York City Schools and graduated from York High in 1949.
She was known for her sports and was table tennis champion. In her younger years she was employed by El-Ge Potato Chips, several department stores, and then retired from the York City Schools as chief cook. She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She sang in Church choirs of Saint Luke and Otterbein United Methodist Churches. She was a member of Job's Daughter International, and loved by her many friends. Her friends knew her as an animal lover. She was always looking for ways to help others in her Church and other ways. She did not let her semi-blindness in one eye to deter her love of reading. Irene and Ernie loved traveling. They visited every state including Alaska, Hawaiian Islands, Canada, and many European countries where they made friends wherever they were. In addition to her husband of 65 years,
Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her three children, Michael Gilbert, and his wife Charlene, of York, Keith "Mick" Gilbert, and his wife Elaine, of Glen Rock, and Alice Corse, and her husband Alan, of Elizabethtown; and six grandchildren, Brian Gilbert of York, Jason Gilbert, and his wife Cristen, of Lyndhurst, Ohio, Amanda Unger of Dover, Kelly Marquardt of Dover, Christopher Gilbert of Glen Rock, and Shawn Wilson of Hanover.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York, with her Pastors, The Rev. Paul E. Stambach, and The Rev. Craig A.
