William E. Gartman, dean of employees of The York Dispatch, where he was composing room foreman since 1882, died at 1:15 a.m. today at the Krout Convalescent Home, south of York. He was 87 years old last Feb. 19. There are no immediate survivors, but he leaves thirteen nephews and nieces, some of whom live in Hanover. In recent years the veteran printer lived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Gemmill, 32 North Harlan street, York, from which place he was removed yesterday to the convalescent home.

Mr. Gartman, who was familiarly known among printing house craftsmen as "Garty," sold on the streets of York the first issues of The York Dispatch. The deceased was dean of Dispatch employes {sic} not only because he was the oldest company employe but also because he was employed for the longest span of time-nearly 74 years. Mr. Gartman was a widower. His wife, Mrs. Agnes Wallace Gartman, died about thirty years ago. His only affiliation was with the York Club of the Printing House Craftsmen which he helped to form. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Strack and Strine funeral home, 1205 East Market street, York. The Rev. William A. Janson, pastor of the Messiah Lutheran church, will officiate. Interment will be in Prospect Hill cemetery.
