From the Ohio Democrat April 12, 1883

There was a family gathering of all the children of Mrs. Matilda Ditto, at the old home on Front street, this city, Thursday, April 5th to celebrate her seventieth birthday. She was born in Nimashillan creek in Stark county and lived there until girlhood, when she moved to Akron. In the year 1838, she came to New Philadelphia and has lived here since that time. There were five daughters and two sons present, with their families, two son-in-laws and one daughter-in-law, and twelve grandchildren present and 5 absent. After they had all assembled in social enjoyment, the good old hymn, "Blest be the ties that bind us" ,was sung by all present. Prayer was then offered up by the old grand-mother, with great feeling and power. Time, sorrow and affliction, have left their finger marks on the old lady. A victim of rheumatism, then she lost her husband during the war of the late rebellion, he having been taken prisoner at the battle of Chickamauga, and was imprisoned in the slaughter-pen of Andersonville, where he died in the fall of 1864, being a prisoner for nearly 14 months. Then in a few weeks came the news of the death of her son John R Ditto, at Savannah, GA. In 1867 her oldest son Joseph was stricken with Cholera and died at St. Louis, MO, which nearly prostrated her. There were nine children altogether, seven living and two dead and although 70 years have passed over her head, still we wish that as many more could pass over. Sincerely may it be said that the last years of her life were the happiest.
