They patrolled the North Atlantic protecting convoys and locating German Submarines.

Sunderland Mark 2, W3988 ZM-P, came down near Doonbeg, Co. Clare, on 3 December 1941, having made two failed attempts to land, and ditched in the sea.
The crew abandoned the aircraft successfully, but only the pilot, F/Lt Fleming DFC and Sgt. J.C. Masterson survived to reach the shore, where they were interned by the Irish authorities for the duration of the war.

The casualties were,

Pilot Officer Wilfred Sefton Emmett RNZAF, aged 26.
Pilot Officer Eric Gerald Marker aged 20.
Sergeant Eric Willows Jackson aged 24.
Sergeant Sydney James Epps aged 25.
Sergeant Maurice Walter Gerald Fox aged 20.
Leading Aircraftman Frederick Walter Lea aged 21, Flight Mechanic.
Leading Aircraftman Andrew Patrick Walker aged 19.
Leading Aircraftman Arthur Doncaster aged 30.
Aircraftman 1st Class Albert Everall Bennett aged 19.

The bodies of Epps, Fox, Lea and an unidentified body were buried in Milltown Malbay Church of Ireland Churchyard.
The bodies of Emmett, Marker, Jackson and Walker were never recovered. They are commemorated at the RAF Memorial at Runnymede.
