Douglas Newell Nelson, who loved his family and his sunshine, died on Oct. 12, 2012, on the first rainy day after a record-breaking stretch of sunny days. He had been diagnosed with a fast-growing brain cancer in June. He was born 86 years ago to Cecelia and Walter Nelson in Bellingham, Wash. He had an older brother, John. The family moved to Portland when Doug was six, living in Oak Grove, Mt. Tabor, Montavilla and Jennings Lodge neighborhoods. He attended Benson Tech High School, working the graveyard shift at the shipyards, building ships for World War II. Doug served in the Merchant Marines during and after the war, in between terms at Oregon State College. He graduated from Oregon College of Education in 1953, where he was voted Most Valuable Player in tennis, and met his life-long love, Karen Kaer. Karen and Doug married and began their teaching careers in Clackamas and Oak Grove. Their two children, Lori and Dan, were born thereafter. After a careful search for the "best and most progressive" school district, the family moved to Cedar Hills in 1960, where Doug continued teaching 7-8 graders at William Walker and Cedar Park Junior Highs. He coached the tennis team, advised student council and was involved in curriculum development. Doug retired from teaching in 1984, giving him and Karen plenty of time with their four beloved grandchildren. He was never bored, as he always had important issues to research: education theories, public policy, character development and politics. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Karen; his daughter, Lori Scott with David; son, Dan Nelson with Heather; and his grandchildren, Stephanie Scott (San Francisco), Allyson Scott (Portland), Michael Nelson (Forest Grove) and Corinne Nelson (Eugene). A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Tualatin Hills Nature Park Interpretive Center. .
