Obituary

John W. Douglas, 90, of Bryan, peacefully passed away Monday morning October 15, 2012 surrounded by his family and the staff he grew to love at St. Joseph Manor in Bryan.Visitation is scheduled for 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Wednesday October 17, 2012 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the College Station City Cemetery on Texas Avenue with Reverend Ted Foote, Jr. and Reverend Marie Mickey officiating.
John was born to Marie Roe and John T. Douglas on October 28, 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from El Monte High School in El Monte, California in 1941 and joined the United States Army Air Corp in 1942. He was transferred to the Bryan Air Force Base, playing the coronet for the Air Force band both on the base and USO dances in Bryan. Ola Mae Turek of Bryan captured his eye and heart at the dances and they were married October 5, 1944.
John has lived in Bryan since 1946. He worked for numerous jewelers in Bryan/College Station, Caldwell Jewelry, Sankey Park Jewelry, and Potts Jewelry. He also worked part-time at Orr's Grocery in Bryan. In 1964, he and his wife Ola Mae opened Douglas Jewelers.and worked side by side until their retirement on January 1, 1987. During their 64 years of marriage they enjoyed traveling, bowling, and playing cards with friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Ola Mae Douglas on October 18, 2010.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Ronnie Arrington of Bryan; his granddaughter, Courtney Garrett and her husband Marc of Bryan; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Logan Garrett of Bryan; a cousin, Maxine Raines of Windsor, Missouri; his sister-in-law, Elsie Mathis of Bryan; and three nieces.
The staff at St. Joseph Manor in Bryan has earned the family's love, blessings and gratitude for the 10 years of care given to both John and Ola Mae.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.
