In 1860, he was a laborer living in Newburg, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 5" tall with dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 19 as a private with Co. E, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Detached as brigade teamster November 20, 1862, and to the pioneer corps February 20, 1863, he honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 24, 1864, as a private with Co. L, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (185th Pa). He was detailed as a teamster from dismounted camp October 31, 1864, and on June 30, 1865, transferred to Co. L, 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry as part of a war-end consolidation effort. He honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865, at Cumberland, Maryland.

He married Louise Goodyear and fathered David (b. @1869) and Charles (b. @1871). Following Louise's death in 1873, he married Mary Miller (her maiden name, too) January 4, 1876, and fathered Frank (b. @1877), Mary Alice (b. 03/08/78), Nannie (b. @1880), and William Norman (b. 04/11/84).
