Theodore Browne Taft, born March 31, 1921, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 17, 2004, in Williamsburg.

Ted was born in Boston, Mass., and lived his early years in Lexington, Mass. He spent many summers, throughout his life, at his second home in Jaffrey, N.H. He had lived in Williamsburg since 1951.

During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. After basic training at Parris Island, S.C., he sailed with the 1st Marine Division to New Zealand. On Aug. 7, 1942, he landed on Tulagi with F Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment, and shortly thereafter on Guadalcanal, remaining there until Dec. 9, 1942. After contracting malaria on Guadalcanal, he was sent to Australia to recuperate. He returned to fight again at Cape Gloucester, New Britain. He returned to the United States with a relapse of malaria and spent his remaining years in the Marine Corps at the Brooklyn Naval Yard, New York City. Thereafter, Ted worked 26 years as a technical advisor for the Department of Defense, retiring in 1977.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, Faye Locke Taft; his mother, Margaret Guild Taft; father, Fletcher Wood Taft; and brother, Col. Howland Guild Taft USMC (Ret).

Survivors include his wife, Nell Gilley Richards Taft; sister, Katharine Taft Saulnier; sons, Chief Warrant Officer Thacher Locke Taft, USCG, George Edwin Richards and Russell Lee Richards; daughters, Katharine (Kitty) Alice Taft and Janice Richards Campbell. His grandchildren are Midshipman 1st Class William Theodore Taft, USNA, Faye Irene Taft, Micah Anthony Cermele and Sarah Elizabeth Cermele.
