Ruth was educated in the Golva schools and graduated with the class of 1935. After graduating from high school, Ruth attended Dickinson Normal School completing a one year rural course. She taught in a country school three miles from the Clarins' home farm. Her dad, Oscar, bought Ruth a good horse and saddled it for her each day by 7:30 a.m. in order for Ruth to ride to the country school. Ruth later attended college in Dillon, Montana, and attained her life teaching certificate.

Ruth met Karnes Johnson at a barn dance held in Slope county. Ruth and Karnes married on June 20, 1941, in Wibaux, Montana. She was teaching school at Alpha at the time. Ruth and Karnes made their home on the X-X Ranch along the Little Missouri River. Karnes served six sessions in the North Dakota State Legislature. Ruth spent a great deal of time in Bismarck and spent many hours attending meetings with the other legislators' wives. She also served as a tour guide at the capitol when school children from their district visited. Ruth was a charter member of the North Dakota Cowbells and belonged to the Beach Eastern Star. She was also a 4-H leader.

In later years, Ruth and Karnes enjoyed going on tours of different countries including England, France, Switzerland, West Germany, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Holland. Other tours took them through the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. They met many interesting people and had wonderful memories from their travels.
