Charles Maertz, departed this life in peace, Jan. 7, 1890, at 10:20 p.m.

Charles Maertz was born in Berlin, Prussia, May 31, 1811. In 1830 he went to London, England, where he practiced his trade of coppersmith for about two years. In 1833 he emigrated to America and settled in St. Louis, Missouri, where being no demand for work in his art, he engaged in Tinsmithing. There he, in 1834, Married Ottille Obert, who survives him.

In May, 1836, he removed to Quincy and worked faithfully at his trade until 1857, when ill health compelled him to relinquish business, but not an active life, for the care of the property he had accumulated by thrift and industry employed him almost constantly until the failure of his health last July.

Charles Maertz was brought up in the Lutheran faith but having been converted until the preaching of Rev. Horatio Foote and changing his views on the
for of baptism, in 1846, he united with the First Baptist church, holding membership there for the rest of his life. He emphatically requested that no eulogy of his character be permitted in print or at the funeral services. It was the request of the deceased that friends should send no floral offerings.
