John Baron, 72, of Mercer Street, Plains, died Thursday night in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

A lifelong resident of Plains, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Mikulich Baron. He was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, where he participated in football and baseball. He attended LaSalle Military Academy, Long Island, N.Y., and Georgetown University.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

He was a member of the Plains Township planning commission.

He retired 15 years ago from the Gulf Oil Co., where he was employed for 30 years.

He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Plains. He was a member and past-president of Plains Lions Club. He was a founding member and president for many years of the Plains Letterman Club. He was inducted in the Plains Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a charter member of the Wilkes-Barre Downtown Touchdown Club. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop William J. Hafey Assembly and the Mountaintop Council 6440. He was a member of Plains American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jennie Falkowski, Dec. 25, 1984.

Surviving are a son, John Jr., Laflin; daughters, Mrs. Frank (Jean) Kotsko, Nanticoke; Mrs. Tom (Joanne) Rushton, Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Mrs. Mitchell (Mary) Zurawski, Plains; Mrs. Michael (Ann) Olinatz, Trucksville; brother, George Myron, Port Angelis, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Monday from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today; and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Christian Wake Services will be Sunday afternoon.

Members of the Plains Lions Club will meet 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the John Baron Memorial Fund, 99 Elmwood Drive, Laflin, Pa. 18702. The fund will benefit Lionism cq and cancer victims and their families.
