William Hudson Pool was named for his grandfather William Hudson , who gave land in SC and NC to James and Ursula Pool (some census and other records use the "Poole" spelling; family records use the "Pool" spelling). Note that names from Wm Hudson's family also appear in Wm Hudson Pool's Uncle (Alexander Pool) family.
He was James Pool's eldest son. From the increase in acreage, it appears that he was a prosperous cotton farmer.
According to the 1860 US Census, William and Catherine owned 4,000 and had a net worth of $ 18,000 in 1860 (some references show a much larger acreage, but that may be either a mis-transcription or possibly the sum of the Pool family acreages. The 1850 Slave census shows William Pool of Laurens owning 15 slaves, these appear to be families and some of the listed persons are very young children.
William Hudson Pool, named for his grandfather William Hudson, was born in Laurens SC a few years after his parents migrated from Meckleinburg VA. Like his father, he was a highly successful planter. The Pool family land holdings were generally between Reedy River and Horse Creek in Princeton, Laurens County SC. We believe (but do not have proof) that Indigo and cotton were the "money crops"
William and Catherine are buried in the Pool family cemetery overlooking Horse Creek in Princeton, Laurens Co SC.
