[NOTE: There is an apparent error throughout the article - The family surname is Brooks, but after the first listing of the deceased's name, the writer used "Farris" as the surname.- KC]
Farris D. (Dutch) Brooks, 47, died at 1 o'clock this morning in Lee Hospital in Fayette as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
-Mr. Farris left his home at the southeast edge of Armstrong about 7 o'clock last night, taking with him his .22 rifle. He was thought by his wife to be going after squirrels, one of his pastimes. When he did not return about 8 o'clock she began a search which ended when he was found in a cornfield near the home with a wound in his left temple.
-Mrs. Farris immediately called the Howard County coroner, Dr. W.A. Bloom of Fayette, who found Mr. Farris still alive and he was taken to the hospital. A note was left by Mr. Farris for his son, Donald Farris of Fayette, but its contents were not disclosed. Dr. Bloom pronounced the wound self-inflicted and said an inquest would not be held.
-Born March 31, 1905, near Armstrong, Mr. Farris was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Farris, who survive him. He attended the Washington rural school, and a number of years ago joined the Friendship Baptist Church.
-In 1928 he married Miss Amelia Childers of Armstrong, who died in 1930. Donald Farris is their son. In 1935 he married Miss Kathryn Swetnam of Armstrong, who survives. He also is survived by a grandson, Jerry Wayne Farris; four brothers, Marion Farris, Chicago; Charles K. Farris, Armstrong; Woodrow Farris, Columbia; and Edgar Farris, Moberly; and three sisters, Mrs. George Meyer and Mrs. Leon Christopher, Chicago; and Mrs. Lee Littrell, Armstrong.
-Employed the past several months on the G.M. and O. railroad section crew Mr. Farris previously worked for the Boonville Mills and also did farm work.
-The body is in the Carr Funeral Home in Fayette, but funeral arrangements will not be made until Mrs. Christopher, vacationing in Wisconsin, is contacted.
