Maurice was born Sept. 23, 1930, near Hopkinton, Iowa, at the Kirkwood family home. He was the son of Howard H. and Evah DeShaw Kirkwood. He received his early education in the rural schools and graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1948. Maurice worked at the Sand Springs Creamery as well as farmed for several years. Maurice and Marilyn Marolf were married Jan. 14, 1951, at the Presbyterian Church, Hopkinton, a marriage that lasted over 50 years. Besides farming, Maurice was also a Maquoketa Valley school bus driver for over 42 years.
