At the age of 18 he enlisted in Battery B, 1st Virginia Light Artillery, and served three years and two months. After his discharge, he re-enlisted in Co. F, 5th U.S. Veteran Regiment, Hancock's Corps and served a little over one year.

After the war he lived in Ohio for 18 months and then moved to a farm in Brown County KS., where he remained for three years. Being driven out by grasshoppers, he moved in 1875 to Jackson County Mo, and became the owner of 200 acres of land near Lone Jack. For a number of years he was a superintendent of the John W. Reid stock farm in Prairie Township.
