Two Men Killed During Past Week

WILLAMINA, Aug. 19 – An epidemic of logging accidents in the woods struck the Willamina logging district last week.

Tom McVeagh, 62, an employee of the Willamina Lumber Company, was killed Thursday at the camp in the Gooseneck district when struck in the back by a limb.

On Monday, James Martin, 22, an employee of the Hurl Logging Company, was killed when struck in the head by a falling limb. He died shortly after arriving at a hospital.

During the week two other men also were killed in the woods west of Willamina in the coast district.

While the accidents were classed an unavoidable, old-time loggers are surprised that there are not more men killed, owing to the great number of inexperienced loggers working. Due to the manpower shortage in the woods, operators are forced to employ an man willing to work and attempt to make a logger but of him.

This not only shows production but endangers the lives of the men and those working with them.

Some sort of a school for those who contemplate working in this dangerous work is needed and is under consideration, the operators said.
