ELOISE (SHIPLEY) HAGAN, age 105, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Friday August 1, 2014 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on September 12, 1908 in Fredericktown, Ohio to the late Willard and Nina (Welker) Shipley.

She graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1926, and then went to Mount Vernon Business College. Eloise and her husband owned and operated Hagan’s Grocery in Mount Vernon. She also worked at the election polls for over 60 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon for 73 years and taught Sunday school for 25 years. Although she received many honors during her lifetime the one that meant the most to her was the Prestigious Clara Barton Award for volunteer leadership. It was only the second one ever awarded in Knox County. Eloise had been a Red Cross volunteer at Martin Memorial Hospital and later Knox Community Hospital for a total of 47 years. She also worked at their blood bank, was involved with blood services community and served on the Knox County Red Cross Board of Directors for several years.

She enjoyed volunteering, gardening, reading, politics (in 2003 she was named Ohio Democrat of the year) but most of all she loved to spend time with her family.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jeannine (Robert) Moreau and Kathy (Larry) Daubenspeck; six grandsons; sixteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband William Hagan Jr., whom she married on August 31, 1927; two brothers, Kenneth and Duane Shipley, half-sister, Eva Loney, granddaughter, Daphane Savage Kennedy.

There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 106 North Gay Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio, 43050. Interment will be in Mound View Cemetery at a later date.
