Red Bank Register, Wednesday, December 13, 1899
Louis Despreaux of Middletown died at the home of his son, Robert Despreaux, on Sunday night, aged 63 years. He had been sick a number of years with a complication of diseases. About two weeks ago he had a paralytic stroke and this hastened his death. He was the son of Louis Despreaux and was born at Locust Point. The early part of his life was spent as a waterman. When the Red Bank and Middletown turnpike company was formed Mr. Despreaux took the position of tollgate keeper and was the first person to collect toll on that road. Mr. Despreaux was one of the first persons to subscribe for THE RED BANK REGISTER and he had taken the paper continuously during the twenty-one years of its existence. He kept the tollgate a number of years. He then went in the hotel business and he received the first license for the New Amsterdam hotel at Locust Point. After running the new Amsterdam a few years he got a license for the old hotel in Middletown village. He conducted that hotel a year or two and then W. A. French of Red Bank built the Village Inn at Middletown for him. After running this hotel a few years he was obliged to give up the hotel business on account of failing health. Since that time he had conducted a business for the sale of soft drinks and light refreshments in the old hotel building.
Mr. Despreaux was twice married. His first wife was Miss Catherine White, daughter of the late Joseph White of Brown's Dock. He leaves two children by this marriage. They are Mrs. Garrett VanKirk of the Highlands and Frank Despreaux of Navesink. His second wife was Miss Anna VanKirk, daughter of the late John VanKirk of the Highlands. By this marriage he leaves one son, Robert Despreaux of Middletown village. He leaves also a brother, Michael Despreaux of Locust Point.
The funeral was held to-day at ten o'clock at the Episcopal church at Middletown and at twelve o'clock at All Saints' church at Navesink. Rev. John C. Lord had charge of the service at Navesink and he also assisted the Middletown pastor at the service at that place. The body was buried at All Saints' burying ground. The bearers were George A. Bowne, William T. Wilson, Abram Stout and William S. Heyer.
