First Families of Channing: BLOCK FOUR
The Cuculis were probably the first family in town; they came from Ontonagon, Michigan where they had operated a hotel. Two weeks after they left Ontonagon, the hotel burned to the ground. There were two sons and four daughters in the family: George, who lost an arm in World War I; Bartol; Harriette, who married William Lueke, no children; Winifred, who married Leo Burns, had one son; Genevieve, who married Richard Boll, had three sons; and Therese, who married Roy Bartos and had one daughter. The sons were not married. [Info by Viola (Mogan) Stevens]

Minnie Johanna Cuculi, 65, died at 12:30 this morning at home following a 10-month illness with heart trouble. She came to Channing from Ontonagon in 1892 & was one of the community’s 1st settlers.
She conducted the Channing Hotel at its opening 45 years ago. In addition to her other, who resides in Waupaca, Wisconsin, she leaves 4 daughters: Mrs. W.C. Lueke, Mrs. Leo Burns, Mrs. Roy Bartos & Mrs. E.J. Leitner; 2 brothers: Barney & Otto Krueger & a sister, Mrs. John Beck.
