As she is written of in a letter from her son Hopestill to his only son Artemas, Elizabeth (Fuller) Bigelow was a courageous and capable Lady. The daughter of Justice of the Peace Aaron Fuller and his wife Rebecca. At the age of twelve, with her father temporarily removed and her older brother, then only fourteen, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, Elizabeth was left to the responsibility of caring for her father's affairs, the family's home and, often, the protection of her younger siblings. A task she well accomplished. "You doubtless think it would be impossible for a young girl of twelve to do at this day work your grandmother did at that age, but she was large and strong and with sparkling eye and cheerful heart would tell us of her work and sufferings, and rejoice that she could do it, while her father and brother were battling for freedom."
