Richard was the son of Edward Kunert and Amelia "Mollie" Pape. On 23 Dec 1918 he married Sylvia Schone; they had no children. Richard was a US Navy veteran of World War I. His WWI draft registration stated that he worked as a gas-fitter for himself. After the war ended he worked in a government depot. He also later worked as a vault-maker for a monument company. Richard died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 42.
