Martina Therese Lawrence, a long-time resident of Joplin, passed away peacefully in the embrace of God's mercy, Saturday, October 27, 2012, surrounded by all her children.

Born June 24, 1922, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Nicholas and Therese Calovich, Croatian immigrants, Martina was the youngest of nine children. Her early years were spent in the Croatian community of Strawberry Hill, Kansas City. Martina never forgot her rich heritage and shared it with her children, especially in her cooking. During holidays and milestone celebrations, she baked her famous Povitica, a sweet Croatian bread.

She married Lee Aubrey Lawrence November 15, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage until Lee's death in April 2001. Together they had eight children; seven survive: Leslie Lawrence and Susan; Linda Conrow; Robert Lawrence; Roberta Lawrence; Marilyn Hadley and husband ,Jeff; Loretta Dalton; Mary "Sam" Metsker and husband, Rick. A son, Lee Aubrey Lawrence, Jr., preceded her in death December 26, 1963. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Martina's home was always a hub of activities, especially on holidays and weekends when children, grandchildren, and extended family gathered with her to watch Kansas City Chiefs televised games.
She loved children and her greatest joy was being able to hold a new grandchild or great-grandchild. Grandma's home was a place where cookies and hugs were in abundance, and where parent's rules could easily be overridden.
Martina attended St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church until illness prevented her from doing so. Her faith and devotion to her Lord remained steadfast throughout her life and in the face of many adversities.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Tuesday, October 30, at St Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 812 Pearl Avenue, Joplin. Visitation begins at 10 am prior to the Service at the church. Burial will be at Ozark Memorial Cemetery. On-line condolences may be sent to the family through our website www.thornhilldillon.com.

The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Russell Kennedy, the staff of Mercy Hospital Joplin, the staff of Landmark Hospital, and special love and gratitude to Mary Morales, her dear friend and hair stylist.

May He support us all the day long till the busy world is hushed and the fever of life is over and our work is done; then in His mercy, He shall give us a safe lodging and a holy rest and peace at the last. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri.
